MY APPROACH

My Humanistic counselling training covered Person-Centred, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt therapy approaches. Each approach offers something different. I see each client as unique and draw on different aspects of these approaches, according to each client's needs.

I recognise that it can feel risky to open up to another person. My down-to-earth and warm nature has been particularly supportive in helping to create an empathic and accepting space where clients can begin to feel comfortable to say, feel and be with whatever they might be experiencing.

We will take things at your pace and work together towards whatever changes you would like to see. You may know what you wish to 'get' from therapy, or it could be more that you have a vague sense of wanting something to be different. Either is fine. I have found that it can sometimes be hard to move towards something being different without understanding what our 'now' is. Therefore I will support you in gaining awareness and clarity around your current situation which often bring about important information (e.g. needs, fears) that informs the ongoing therapeutic work.

I believe that somewhere within we have an inner compass and resources to help us navigate our way through life. As part of our work, I will support you in accessing these internal resources, and we might explore what could be getting in the way of you connecting with these other parts of 'you'.

I see therapy as a collaborative endeavour which, for me, means that I pay attention to my experiences in the sessions and may feedback to you something that I feel may be helpful for you.

I have found that some of our current difficulties originate in our childhood. It can be an important part of the therapeutic work to acknowledge and explore certain early life experiences. Looking at your early life would be something we can do, only if you feel open to this.

I recognise that our identities are multi layered and fit within a wider sociopolitical context and that both of our identities are brought into the therapy space. I aim to hold a space where you can bring and be open about all the different parts of you.
